March is National Nutrition Month

February 28, 2014

March is “National Nutrition Month,” so let’s talk nutrition!Nutrition

How many of us made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and get fit? We’re sure a lot of us did. Now for the better question… how many of us have followed through with that resolution? We’re going to guess not too many have! But that’s ok because we’re going to battle the bulge together. Nutrition isn’t about crazy fad diets and insane workouts. It’s about making the decision to live a healthier lifestyle. It’s about eating well-balanced, portion controlled meals. So, let’s get started by going over some helpful tips:

  • Start with a plan for life long health
  • Set healthy, realistic goals
  • Eat at least three meals a day and plan your meals ahead of time
  • Balance your plate with a variety of foods
  • Start your meal with low calorie foods like fruits, vegetables, and salads
  • Focus on your food
    • Try to avoid other activities while eating
    • Switch from a larger plate to a smaller plate. This will give the impression that you are eating more than you actually are and is a good technique for portion control
  • Know when you’ve had enough to eat
    • Quit before you feel stuffed
  • Get plenty of fiber
    • Helps you feel full longer and lowers risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes
  • Snack Smart
    • Try to plan them out and have healthy available options
  • Find a balance between food and physical activity
    • Pick activities you like
    • Aim for 2 ½ hours a week of moderate activity
  • Drink eight (8) glasses of water a day
