Data Breach Warning for Past and Current Employees of Turner Construction Company

data-breachThe NYCDCC Benefit Funds recently received notification that Turner Construction Company, a Contributing Employer to the Funds, suffered a data breach which compromised personal information of its employees. The people impacted by this data breach are current or former employees, including interns and trade employees, who received a W-2 form from the company for 2015. The disclosed information that was breached included employees’ full names, Social Security numbers, states of residence, states of employment, and federal, state, local tax and Medicare withholding data.

It did not include any information on spouses, dependents, bank accounts, or direct deposit information. It also did not include employee IDs, addresses, or dates of birth.

While this data breach also did not include the Turner Construction Company’s retirement plans at Fidelity, the company has contacted Fidelity to inform them of the incident. Fidelity is recommending that affected employees immediately change their user name if their Social Security Number serves as a user name for the account. Affected employees can call Fidelity at (877) 887-6266, and select Option 2 to make the change.

In response to this breach, Turner Construction Company is offering access to Kroll Identity Monitoring Services. The company is offering this service at no charge to its affected employees. The service will provide additional measures to protect identities and monitor credit for any fraudulent activities.

Turner Construction Company also recommends that affected employees remain vigilant and closely monitor financial accounts. This can be done by taking the following steps:

  • Subscribe to a service such as Experian, LifeLock, Identity Guard, or a similar service to obtain credit monitoring services. The company will offer reimbursement for the cost of this service.
  • Affected employees should contact credit card and other financial companies to alert them that their identity was compromised, and to establish additional security on personal accounts.
  • Place a fraud alert message on credit files through a credit reporting agency such as Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. By placing this alert on credit files, any company that requests a credit file will receive a message warning them that affected employees may have been a victim of fraud. This step will help accounts from being opened or used by anyone other than the actual person.
  • File income taxes as soon as possible.

For those who have already signed up for LifeLock or a similar service, a financial manager from the company will give you a cost code to use to apply for company reimbursement.
